2008 Crystal
Single-family LEED Project

On a sunny fall morning in September, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity raised the first walls of the 2008 Green Demonstration House in Crystal, Minnesota.  A crew of Cargill volunteers was on hand to help lift the first walls on the first LEED certified Habitat for Humanity house in the Twin Cities.  The project was completed the following Spring, and the homeowners purchased and moved into the home in May, 2009.

The house included the following elements: Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) foundation; radiant floor heating system in the lower level; energy efficient wall framing systems; steel roof shingles; fiber cement siding; Energy Star appliances; energy efficient Andersen windows; low-VOC paint; concrete with recycled fly ash; rain gardens; and more.

“Our family can hardly wait to move in.  We’re proud of being a Habitat family, and excited to have this special green house,” said Fahami Jabril at the home dedication ceremony on April 18.

Cargill was the primary house sponsor for the Crystal Green Demonstration House, and has also committed to sponsoring Twin Cities Habitat’s next LEED single-family home project, breaking ground in Hopkins this Fall, September 2009.

“Cargill has been a global partner with Habitat for Humanity International for many years,” said Greg Page, chairman and chief executive officer of Cargill. “We’re committed to applying our knowledge and experience to help meet complex economic, environmental and social challenges.  As part of that commitment, our employees have helped build more than 400 houses with Habitat in 19 countries on six continents.”
